Traffic Congestion in Megacities

So much of this summer of mine has been spent at stuck in traffic jams in Dhaka. I often think about how to change the situation and often come up with a range of grand (and possibly unrealistic) solutions: let’s get everyone to ride bicycles and have Smart-bike points like they do in Paris. Or what about just building some more flyovers; increase the capacity of the streets? How about congestion zone charging similar to London or why not try taxing the crap out of cars? I discussed my thoughts with a thoughts with a development researcher and it turns out that roads in Dhaka are operating at only 10% of the capacity. So what is to blame for all the chaos?!?! The fact that no two vehicles follow each other in a civilized manner on the streets of Dhaka. Maybe we could start training kids in city schools to start educating their parents on appropriate road manners just like the student brigade in villages are teaching their parents on hygiene behavior. Anyone got any other bright ideas?

  1. after being in USA from dhaka, i can see massive differences in roads and traffic system. Although its a little fun to have no speed limits in dhaka and other restrictions but i think its better to have some strict laws to avoid jam and pollution.. students and children should be taught rules and regulations and ofcourse not to forget the road manners :)
